PREMIUMS TO RISE ON STATE AUTO PLAN

Owners of about 45,000 private passenger vehicles covered by the Virginia Automobile Insurance Plan will pay about 8.8 percent more for liability, collision and comprehensive insurance coverage. The increase is effectiveApril 1 for new policies and May 1 for renewals.

However, they will be paying slightly more than one-third of the 22.4 percent increase requested by the administrator of the plan. The State Corporation Commission's Bureau of Insurance said the original request would have produced excessive rates and premiums.

For commercial vehicles, the plan had asked for an overall increase of 37.6 percent; the SCC approved a 17.6 percent rise. - Staff report
