PRINCIPALS' SALARIES AVERAGE NEAR $60,000

The nation's high school principals are earning an average of $59,106 this year, a 6.1 percent gain over 1989-90, according to an annual survey released Thursday.

Salaries across the country range from $34,175 to $94,682, according to the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which released the data at its annual convention being held in Orlando, Fla.

The survey of 1,041 school districts does not identify salary levels in specific schools or states. But Paul Hersey, the association's director of professional assistance, said in an interview that, as a region, states in the Far West pay principals the most, while Southern states are at the low end.
