MEDECO TO TRIM 35 FROM WORK FORCE

Medeco Security Locks Inc. of Salem said Friday it will lay off 35 employees, a result of a drop in sales and orders for future sales.

Tim Layton, the company's president, said the layoffs represent 6 percent of the company's work force of 575. The action started Friday and will be completed by next Friday. Employee benefits will be based on length of service, Layton said.

This is one of the few layoffs in the 22-year history of the maker of high security locks for residential, commercial and government projects, Layton said.

The decline in sales appears to be tied to the generally weakened economy and the company forecasts it will be short term, Layton said.
