MARTIN, JAMES R., JR.

James Robert Martin Jr., age 72, formerly of Pulaski, departed this life Wednesday, March 13, at the VA Hospital in Salem after a short illness. He was born July 8, 1918 in Pulaski, the son of the late James R. Martin Sr. and Linnie Hunter Martin. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Pulaski. He attended elementary school in Pulaski, and he also attended Morris Town College and Bluefield State College, Bluefield, W. Va., receiving a B.S. Degree in Chemistry. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was also a member of the Bluefield State College Alumni Association. He was a veteran having served in World War II in the U.S. Army. He was employed by the Veterans Administration serving as Personnel Manager (Headstone Branch Memorial Division) in Washington, D.C. He had been a resident of Washington, D.C. for forty years. After retirement he moved to Salem and lived with his sister, Lucy M. Harmon for three years until his death. His survivors are two brothers, Lieutenant Colonel (retired) John H. Martin, Pittsburg, Pa.; Joshua Martin, Erie, Pa.; three sisters, Lucy M. Harmon, Salem; Dr. Mary M. Dickerson, Chicago, Ill.; Ruby Sealy, Brooklyn, N.Y.; one aunt, Estelle Martin, Hemstead, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Chauncey Harmon, Salem; Thomas Sealy, N.Y.; three sisters-in-law, Patricia Martin, Helen D. Martin, and Helen M. Martin; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Monday at 2:00 p.m at the First Baptist Church, Magazine Street, Pulaski, with the Rev. Gary T. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Pinehurst Cemetery, Pulaski. The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at the First Baptist Church, Magazine Street. Penn's Funeral Home, Pulaski is in charge of arrangements.
