QUICKLINE

Q: Are radar detectors still illegal in Virginia? I thought the law had been changed. - T.H., Roanoke

A: Radar detectors are still illegal in the state; however, the change you are referring to is that they no longer are confiscated and destroyed, according to a state police spokesman. Instead, the detector may be used in court as evidence - it depends on the locality, according to the spokesman.

Sharing a warning

A Quickline reader wrote the following letter to warn consumers about a sewing machine she had "won."

"I received a card from Richard Carlsen of Sweepstakes U.S.A. in Garnerville, N.Y., stating that I had won a sewing machine, but I had to pay $19.87 for postage and handling. I sent the check for that amount.

Two months later I received my machine - it was plastic and about a foot long. The postage was $2.40. I do not want a refund, I just want to warn other people to keep them from being as stupid as me." - M.S., Roanoke
