NAVY CUTS THREATEN BUILDERS, HEARING TOLD

Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. in Newport News warned Congress of a massive layoffs if the Navy proceeds with a post-Cold War slowdown in submarine construction.

The plant would drop its submarine division of 12,500 workers if it failed to win a key contract, yard officials told a Senate subcommittee Tuesday.

Another titan of the military shipbuilding business also warned of mass layoffs and possible closure in the event of a slowdown. The Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corp., based in Connecticut and Rhode Island, is certain to cut its work force of 22,000 in half by 1995 and could close entirely, that yard's chief said.
