INMATE IS FOUND GUILTY OF THREATENING DELEGATE

An Augusta Correctional Center inmate has been convicted of sending a threatening letter to House Speaker A.L. Philpott.

David Maddox, 21, was sentenced to three years in prison after his conviction Tuesday on a single count of sending threatening letters.

Mary Barnette, a secretary for Philpott, testified that on April 10, 1990, she received a letter addressed to Philpott. The letter said: "Mr. Philpott, this is to let you know you are doing a good job. Keep up the good work. Also, you will be killed by me or a member of my team unless I receive $100 million in 100 days . . . "

The letter said the money should be delivered to Kenny Daniels of Falls Church.

"Also, you should give me $111 million for Mary Sue Terry or you and her and your families will be killed," the letter said.

A return envelope addressed to Maddox at the Augusta prison was included in the letter.

Commonwealth's Attorney Lee Ervin said handwriting samples verified Maddox wrote the letters.
