ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT AT ADULT HOME PROBED

Virginia State Police officers are investigating allegations of an embezzlement at Oak Grove Lodge, a state-licensed adult home in Pittsylvania County.

J.T. Oliver, the state police agent in charge of the Salem office, confirmed the investigation Tuesday but would not say who the suspect or suspects are, how much money was allegedly stolen or when the alleged embezzlement occurred.

The investigation began Monday and was requested by the Pittsylvania County commonwealth's attorney's office, Oliver said.

The adult home is operated by the South-Central Aging Consortium Inc., a private, non-profit corporation formed in 1978.

Bonnie Conklin, acting administrator of the home, declined to comment on the investigation today.

More than 60 elderly people live at Oak Grove, which has an annual budget in excess of $500,000, said Ed Trice, chairman of the corporation's board.

The building is owned by Pittsylvania, Halifax, Henry, Patrick and Amherst counties and leased to the Aging Consortium.

The adult home gets its funding through grants from the Department of Social Services, the Veterans Administration, resident fees and private contributions, Trice said. It is not presently receiving local government funds.
