MAGNA VISTA WINS 7-5 ON GRAND SLAM BY CLARK

Bud Clark's grand slam lifted Magna Vista to a 7-5 victory over Tunstall on Wednesday in the high school baseball season opener for both Piedmont District teams.

Tunstall led 5-3 in the fourth when Clark connected. Tunstall's Craig Gammon had a solo home run.

Magna Vista's Jeff Berry was 2-for-2.

In other high school baseball action:

Franco Martin drove in three runs as Martinsville beat Fieldale-Collinsville 15-7 in a five-inning Piedmont District game called because of darkness.

Dwayne Rogers and Marc Ivey each drove in two runs in the season opener for both teams.

Kevin Dehaven and Richard Bowman each drove in a run for Carroll County, which beat Giles County 6-2 in a non-district game.

Stacy Hutchison was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Giles (0-1).

Carroll County is 2-0.

Jay Lancaster's bases-loaded triple broke open the game as Chatham beat Dan River 10-1 in both teams' season opener.

Scott Hubbard had a solo home run for Chatham, and Jason Merricks and Mark Bullock each went 2-for-3. Merricks allowed four hits in seven innings pitched.

Matt Frazier had two of Dan River's hits.

Fort Chiswell's Brian Pearman went 3-for-3 and had a three-run home run to lead the Pioneers to an 8-5 victory over Pulaski County in a non-district game at Fort Chiswell.

It was the season opener for both teams.

B.W. Hill was 2-for-3 and was the winning pitcher for Fort Chiswell.

For Pulaski, John Akers had a three-run homer.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Chelsea Eichelberger scored midway through the first half as Patrick Henry beat Martinsville 1-0 in a non-district game at Patrick Henry.

It was the season opener for both teams.

\ SOFTBALL: Bath County built an 8-0 lead and hung on for a 9-7 non-district victory over Buffalo Gap. It was Bath's season opener; Buffalo Gap is 0-2.

Donna Hickman walked none and struck out two and gave up 10 hits as Magna Vista defeated Gretna 11-10 in a Piedmont District game at the the Ruritan Field in Spencer.

Sharon Mayes went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Jennifer Jordan went 2-for-3 for Magna Vista (1-1, 1-1).

Gretna scored four runs on four errors in the top of the seventh inning. Jill Roland was the losing pitcher.
