GLENVAR STARTS SEASON BY BEATING SHAWSVILLE

Sean Grinnell's two-run triple broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh inning and led Glenvar to an 8-6 victory over Shawsville on Wednesday in a non-district game that was the high school baseball season opener for both teams.

Glenvar entered the seventh trailing 5-4 but scored the tying run on an error.

Glenvar's Greg Anderson was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Glenvar pitcher Doug Croy threw four innings and struck out eight.

In other high school baseball action:

Matt Reynolds was 2-for-2 and drove in two runs to lead host William Byrd past Patrick Henry 3-0 in the season opener for both teams.

Mark Mitchell was 2-for-2 for the Patriots.

Byrd's Brian Young pitched 4 innings, allowing three singles, striking out 10 and walking two.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Forward A.J. Esguerra's first-half goal held up as North Cross beat Northside 1-0 in a non-conference boys' game at North Cross.

It was the season-opener for both teams.

Sweeper Tres Moore passed to Esguerra in the box, and Esguerra put in a 10-foot shot.

Stopper Ryan Cook helped North Cross' defense hold Northside to nine shots on goal.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Chelsea Eichelberger scored midway through the first half as Patrick Henry beat Martinsville 1-0 in a non-district game at Patrick Henry.

It was the season opener for both teams.
