INMATE CONVICTED FOR THREAT IN LETTER

An inmate at Augusta Correctional Center has been sentenced to three years in prison for sending a threatening letter to House Speaker A.L. Philpott.

David L. Maddox, 21, was convicted Tuesday.

Mary L. Barnette, a secretary for Philpott, testified that on April 10, 1990, she received a letter addressed to Philpott that included a return envelope addressed to Maddox at the Augusta prison.

The letter said: "Mr. Philpott, this is to let you know you are doing a good job. Keep up the good work. Also, you will be killed by me or a member of my team unless I receive $100 million in 100 days . . . " - Associated Press
