WOMAN TELLS POLICE GROUP ATTACKED HER

A 20-year-old woman told city police that she was attacked and beaten by a group of 10 men and women as she left a Northwest Roanoke apartment Wednesday night.

Joyce Ann Brown, of Ranch Road Northwest, was treated and released from Community Hospital.

While at the hospital, she reported to police that she was leaving an apartment on Bennett Drive Northwest about 8 p.m. when the group approached her.

One woman, whom Brown described to police as the apparent leader of the group, accused her of owing $50. The woman then led the group in kicking and beating Brown, police said.

Brown also told police that one of the men struck her above the right ear with a gun.

No arrests have been made, but police said Brown has agreed to cooperate in the investigation.

In another report to police today:

A man who was seen bleeding from the hand outside Community Hospital refused to explain to police how he received gunshots to his hand and his car.

David Scott Whitmore, 24, of Avenel Avenue Southwest, was seen by a police officer as he got out of his car in the hospital parking lot about 9:30 p.m.

Whitmore had been shot in the hand, and there was a bullet hole in the right side of his car, but he refused to cooperate with police.
