MEMPHIS STATE SWEEPS HOKIES

Memphis State swept a Metro Conference baseball doubleheader from Virginia Tech on Saturday, winning 15-12 and 5-4.

The Tigers (22-12 overall, 4-4 Metro) capitalized on eight Tech errors in the opener, and Memphis State's Dan King hit a first-inning grand slam.

For the Hokies (14-15, 4-4), former Cave Spring player Jay Honse knocked in three runs with a bases-loaded double, and J.R. Hawkins and Mike Reedy each added three RBI with three hits.

Tech (14-15, 4-4) committed four errors in the fifth inning, when Memphis State picked up five runs. The Tigers had four errors for the game, and only five of the 27 total runs were earned.

In the second game, Tech led 4-0 after one inning, but the Tigers' Terry Rooker hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to tie the score, and pinch hitter Jeff Hoekstra drove in the winning run later in the inning with two out.

Greg Smith picked up the victory, pitching four innings of one-hit baseball.
