MAROONS 3RD, FERRUM 4TH IN STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Christopher Newport, led by Jeff Holler's 9-over 79 over The Homestead Cascade course Sunday, posted a 324 to win the rain-shortened 31st Virginia Collegiate golf championship.

The Captains finished the 18-hole event with a 324, nine shots better than second-place Longwood. Roanoke College finished third at 336 and Ferrum was fourth at 338.

Individual honors went to Steve Crute of Longwood who bested Holler, David Brandshaw of Bridgewater and Joe Maxey of Newport News Apprentice in a playoff hole after all four finished with a 79.

Frank Richardson was the low man for Roanoke with an 81, placing him eighth in the field. Roanoke's Sam Taylor was 13th with an 83 and Bob Spellane was 17th after shooting an 84.
