FRANKLIN BOARD OKS PLAN FOR REDISTRICTING

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a redistricting plan that would place nearly 4,000 residents in new voting districts.

The board voted to submit the plan to the U.S. Justice Department for approval under the Voting Rights Act. No one spoke for or against the plan at a public hearing.

The board redrew district and precinct lines to conform to new population figures from last year's census. The new lines will be in effect for the Sept. 10 primary election for local offices. No polling places have been moved.

The redistricting plan involves these changes:

1,256 people in the Gogginsville section will move from the Boone District to Blackwater District.

1,208 people in the Coopers Cove section shift from the Gills Creek District to Boone.

Nearly 800 Rocky Mount-area residents on Diamond Avenue Extension and Scuffling Hill Road shift from Blackwater District to the Rocky Mount District.

390 residents in the Forest Hills subdivision and Doe Run Road area move from Union Hall District to Snow Creek District.

More than 200 residents in the Thompson Plant Road area shift from Gills Creek to Boone.

66 residents on the south side of Turners Creek Road move from Blackwater to the Blue Ridge District.

The plan will not affect the boundaries of the four magisterial districts - Boone, Gills Creek, Rocky Mount and Union Hall - covered by the county's 1988 zoning ordinance.
