BUCS BLANK PILOTS 5-0

Steve Buckholz turned out the lights on the Peninsula Pilots as the Salem Buccaneers picked up a 5-0 win Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.

Buckholz (1-1) struck out 11 over seven innings, allowed three hits and gave up two walks to shut out the home team as Salem improved to 3-3.

Peninsula pitcher Jim Converse gave the Bucs all the runs they would need on walks.

In the third inning, Converse walked two and gave up a bunt single to Kevin Young that loaded the bases. Converse struck out two, but then walked Ben Shelton to force in a run. Converse walked eight of the 18 batters he faced.

In the fourth inning, another Peninsula pitcher started out by issuing two walks in an inning that produced four runs on three hits. Roman Rodriguez, Young and Mike Brewington each singled in a run. Young scored the final run on a delayed steal.

The Pilots (1-5) have scored two runs in their past three games. Their only threat came in the ninth inning when runners reached second and third. Salem reliever David Tellers, who pitched the last two innings, struck out a batter, got a runner out on a bunt and another on a grounder force out to end the threat.
