WILDER ANSWERS CRITICS IN DANVILLE

Gov. Douglas Wilder, flanked by members of the national press corps, took his series of open houses to Danville where local college students protested the governor's cuts to education.

It was the seventh such open house held throughout the state by Wilder and drew about 80 people. This time press coverage included reporters from U.S. News & World Report and the Canadian Broadcast Corp.

Ten students from Averett College, a private Baptist college, told Wilder they were unhappy with his budget cuts, which included less money for the state's Tuition Assistance Grants.

The $1,350 grant is given to private college students.

Other area residents complained that state budget cuts hurt rural Virginia.
