FIRE AT PEBBLE CREEK BLAMED ON CEILING FAN

A bathroom ceiling fan that overheated and caught fire started a blaze that damaged two apartments Friday night at the Pebble Creek complex in Southwest Roanoke County, a county fire official said Saturday.

Fire Marshal Donald Gillespie said the fire burned for more than an hour in a concealed attic space before it was detected. The fire was reported at 10:18 p.m.

Most of the estimated $35,000 in damage occurred in an inner wall between the two apartments and to the roof, Gillespie said.

Residents were evacuated, and no injuries were reported, Gillespie said.

Gillespie said several fires have occurred at Pebble Creek in recent years, but they were "nothing unusual."

A fire occured in 1986 in the same building as Friday's blaze, Gillespie said. That fire killed Fred Frelantz, a Roanoke musician and WROV disc jockey.
