MCGUIRE DOMINATES IN TOMBSTONE PIZZA WIN

Tony McGuire quickly put the competition to rest in Saturday night's Tombstone Pizza 300 auto race at Franklin County Speedway.

Duplicating his season-opening rout two weeks ago, McGuire buried the field, leading every lap en route to victory in the 50-lap Late Model Stock feature.

The 23-year-old driver from Vinton picked up $1,500, running his two-race season's haul to $4,000.

McGuire's two victories have come with such ridiculous ease that some must be wondering if he should be locked up for grand larceny.

"Sure, it's easy now, but I know how fast things can change in this sport," McGuire said. "I don't really think our race car is so superior. I just think everyone else is off to a slow start. A couple guys have brand new cars and they're having trouble getting things sorted out.

"But let me tell you. If I can do this every week, I'll take it. You've got to take it while you can get it."

Martinsville's Kenny Minter finished second to McGuire's Camaro, somewhere in another area code.

"Tony is real strong right now," Minter said. "But we're just getting our act together. I hope we can give him a run before long. We'll get there, believe me."

Rocky Mount's Rick Sigmon finished third in a Pontiac.

In the 25-lap Mini Stock opener, Roanoker Robert Cox and his Pinto dusted the 12-car field, starting on the pole and leading all the way.

The race was marred by a multicar collision on the final lap, triggered by Chip Bruner's spin in turn two. All of the drivers in the accident escaped uninjured.

Henry's Tim Willis finished a distant second in a Mercury. Goodview's Ray Bare took advantage of Bruner's spin to take third.

In the Street Stock division, Rocky Mount's Kenny Wagner continues to be the man to beat. Wagner, the defending class champion, led all but the first two laps in posting his second victory in two tries this season.

Randy Arrington of Rocky Mount finished four car lengths back in second, and Bassett's Chris Foley took third.

Stuart's Jay Foley recovered from an early spinout to capture the 25-lap Modified-Six Cylinder division race.
