WRITERS TO TEACH AT COLLEGE

Active writers will become guest teachers for a non-credit creative-writing course planned for the coming semester at Mountain Empire Community College.

Teachers will include Denise Giardina, author of "Storming Heaven" and a new novel, "The Unquiet Earth," due out in March; Richard H. Peake, whose first poetry collection will be published in April; Kenneth Lyons, a Virginia Poetry Association member; Mary E. and James R. O'Dell, Green River Writers representatives who have both published poetry collections; Paul and Sheila Kuczko, owners of The Appalachian Peddler in Norton; and Shane Bonham, a student at the school whose poetry was published in the National Beta Club Journal when he was in high school.

M. Ray Allen, who has a master of fine arts degree in screenplay from UCLA, will lecture on screen writing for one class period.

John M. Clarke will coordinate the three-hour class, which will meet Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Classes run from Jan. 18 to April 18. The course fee is $75.
