FLEMING ENDS LOSING STREAK

Carlos Rhodes got his shooting eye just in time for William Fleming on Saturday.

The junior guard scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Colonels pulled away to defeat Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley 51-42 in the opening game of the Crestar Roundball Classic basketball doubleheader on Saturday at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Rhodes made a 3-point shot, a couple of follow-up attempts and a layup in displaying his versatility.

"Coach [Burrall Paye] told me to shoot both inside and outside. It doesn't matter to me. I take whatever shot I have," said Rhodes, who finished with a game-high 21 points.

The victory helped a young Fleming team (5-3) end a three-game losing streak. Grimsley, also a young team with four junior starters, is 6-5.

Paye didn't see his team needing a victory for confidence. "When you have a senior group that loses three in a row, they start doubting themselves," Paye said. "When you have a young group like we have, they're much more resilient.

"That's why a young team can go 4-15 one year and bounce back to start 15-0 the next year."

The Colonels trailed at the half but took the lead for good when Rhodes slipped in for a layup to make it 29-27 with 1:22 left in the third quarter. Fleming widened its lead with a 9-4 spurt midway through the fourth quarter that made it 42-33. Rhodes' follow shot capped the run.

The game might have been over then, but Grimsley rallied. Milt Williams' 3-pointer made it 46-42, but freshman guard Derrick Hines sank two free throws for Fleming with 19 seconds left to push the lead back to six and ice the Colonels' victory.

"We've been an up-and-down team," said Grimsley coach Robin Lincks, whose team made only one of 15 3-point attempts. "When your best shooter [Williams] goes [1-of-10] from the floor, it's difficult."

Both teams struggled. Fleming made only 15 of 46 field-goal attempts and Grimsley was as icy at 19-of-61. The Whirlies had a 44-38 edge in rebounding as Mike Cassidy led with 11.

Fleming's David Williams played the game on a sprained ankle, pulling in nine rebounds and scoring seven points.

"We couldn't take him out because the ankle gets cold and then it starts to give him too much pain," Paye said. \
