CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM TO FEATURE PIANO TRIO SATURDAY

The Roanoke Valley Chamber Music Society will continue its 1991-92 season Saturday with a concert by The Monticello Trio.

The performance will feature a piano trio that was written for the group by English composer Nicholas Maw. It was premiered by the trio last May at the Bath International Festival in England.

Maw will be present for Saturday's concert, which is set for 8 p.m. in Olin Hall. He will deliver the concert preview at 7:30 p.m. and will take questions after the performance as well.

Also on the program are Haydn's Trio in A major (Hob. XV:18) and Mendelssohn's Trio in C minor, Op. 66.

The Monticello Trio has been in residence at the University of Virginia since the mid-1980s. It consists of pianist Tannis Gibson, violinist Mark Rush and cellist Mathias Wexler.

They have been praised as "gifted players with a mature and eloquent touch and a finely tuned sense of ensemble" (The Washington Post).

Gibson received a master's degree from the Juilliard School and completed advanced studies at the Banff School for the Arts in Canada. Rush, who has a master's degree from Yale University, also completed advanced music studies at the Banff Center.

Wexler has a bachelor's degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and a master's degree from Yale.

All are on the faculty of the university's McIntire Department of Music. They also serve as co-directors of the Albemarle Chamber Music Festival.

Tickets for Saturday's concert are $10 for adults and $5 for those aged 18 and under. The tickets can be reserved at the Olin box office (375-2333) or purchased at the door.
