SHERIFF OF BRISTOL TARGET OF PROBE

The director of the National Sheriffs' Association said Sunday that the group expects its president, Bristol Sheriff Marshall Honaker, to resign this week as the result of a federal probe.

"We're waiting for him to follow through with what he's told us he'd do," said Charles Meeks, executive director of the Alexandria-based lobbying and educational group.

Meanwhile, sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the Bristol Herald-Courier newspaper that other key city officials are targeted in an investigation of alleged embezzlement involving the Sheriff's Department.

Meeks said he spoke briefly with Honaker on Friday night, after dozens of agents from the FBI and Internal Revenue Service stormed the Bristol Sheriff's Department and Honaker's home.

Honaker, 55, who has served as the city's sheriff for the past 18 years, has not been charged, but federal agents have seized his home, three personal vehicles and private bank accounts, in addition to numerous boxes of files from both the Sheriff's Department and the Bristol Courthouse.

"He indicated to me that he does plan to resign [from the NSA]," Meeks said. Meeks said the NSA's bylaws require a president to submit his resignation in writing, and he hadn't received anything Sunday.

Meeks said the NSA didn't advise Honaker to step down, and declined to comment on the probe, saying, "We don't have all the facts and information to make a judgment on it."

Sheriff Frank Policaro of Beaver, Pa., will take the helm as president of the NSA effective immediately upon the arrival of Honaker's resignation, Meeks said.

Honaker said he is taking a leave of absence until the investigation is completed. Chief Deputy Charles Arnold has taken charge of the office.

Attempts to reach Honaker have been unsuccessful. City Manager Paul Spangler has declined to comment.
