OFFICIALS ACCEPT FREE TRAVEL

Virginia's top officials accepted free trips to Japan, Taiwan, Israel and Puerto Rico last year, according to economic disclosure reports released Thursday.

Attorney General Mary Sue Terry took a trip to Israel in October with the $4,000 cost paid by the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond.

Terry is investigating a conflict-of-interest allegation against former Public Safety Secretary Robert Suthard relating to a free trip he took to Japan last April.

Former Gov. Gerald Baliles took the trip when he was attorney general and Gov. Douglas Wilder went when he was lieutenant governor, Love-Bryant said.

Wilder went to Taiwan for a weekend in June at the expense of the Evergreen International Corp., a shipping line. The trip cost the company $9,115, according to Wilder's report.

Lt. Gov. Don Beyer took a trip to the National Sheriff's Association meeting in Minneapolis with the $506 cost paid by the state sheriff's association.

Economic Development Secretary Lawrence Framme went on a goose hunt paid for by the James River Corp. and went deep-sea fishing off Cape Hatteras, N.C., as the guest of the Armada-Hoffler development firm.
