GEORGE WYTHE HANDS MARION 70-60 SETBACK

Chris Waddell scored a game-high 24 points Wednesday night to lead George Wythe to a 70-60 high school basketball victory over Marion.

Jeff Bourne added 10 points as George Wythe improved to 9-4.

Marion (13-2) was led by Malcolm Boothe, who scored 22 points. Bryan Bernon chipped in 11 points and Eric Hungate had 10 for the Scarlet Hurricane. \

Tuesday's games

\ George Wythe 73, Rural Retreat 46: In Rural Retreat, the Maroons won their eighth straight game by outbattling the undersized Indians on the boards and inside.

Malcolm Lewis scored 16 points and Sie Dickinson added 11 as George Wythe improved to 8-4, 6-1 in the Hogoheegee District. Rural Retreat (1-9, 0-7) got 18 from Thomas Taylor. \

Dan River 73, Gretna 69: In Gretna, in their first game back from exams all was not well for Gretna. Two starters were ruled academically ineligible and another sat for most of the first quarter because he missed practice due to illness.

It was all too much to overcome as the Wildcats drubbed the Hawks in a Piedmont District tussle.

Brian Gunn scored 26 points, Roderick Davis 17 and Sonny Motley 15 as Dan River improved to 4-8 overall, 2-7 in the district.

Guard Eric Jones' and forward Richard Slayton's academic difficulties and Eric Waller's illness led to a shakeup of Gretna's lineup. But Waller, who entered the game with about a minute left in the first quarter, led Gretna (4-8, 2-7) with 27 points. \

Floyd County 60, Rocky Gap 40: In Floyd, Fred Via scored Floyd County's first six points - making two 3-pointers back-to-back - as the Buffaloes defeated the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Via had five 3-pointers for the game and scored 18 points. Travis Crawford had 18 points and seven assists for Floyd County (10-1, 8-1).

Rocky Gap is 4-6, 3-6. \
