THE TIPOFF

JAZZMASTERS: Billy Taylor and Ramsey Lewis, two coolly elegant jazz piano players, will perform in concert Wednesday night at 7:30 in Burruss Auditorium at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Their concert will give the lie to those who claim that big-name jazz entertainers never come to these parts.

They don't do it very often, we'll grant you. All the more reason to head to Blacksburg on Wednesday.\

GREATNESS: Actor Fred Morsell will star in "Presenting Mr. Frederick Douglass," a performance based on speeches and autobiographies of the 19th-century abolitionist and statesman, Thursday night at 8:15 in the Hollins College Theatre.

Morsell has appeared on television's "Hill Street Blues" and "LA Law" and performed in more than 21 operas.

By the way, "Diva," a French film, will be shown in Babcock Auditorium of Hollins' Dana Science Building on Tuesday night at 8. It involves an opera- loving, teen-age mail carrier who gets caught up in murder, intrigue and passion.\

CREATIVITY: BeBe Miller & Company, an innovative modern dance troupe, will perform at Hollins Theatre on Sunday night at 8:30. Admission is $5 for the general public and $3 for students and senior citizens.\

SACRED: Seventeenth-century composer Heinrich Schutz will be spotlighted Saturday night at 8 by the Rockbridge Chamber Chorus. The concert will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lexington.

The principal work will be the "Musicalische Exequiem," a German requiem in three movements.

William McCorkle directs. There will be an admission charge.\

TWO BLUES: Turner and Lynn Foddrell will perform at New York's Carnegie Hall this spring, but tonight they're at McBryde Auditorium of Virginia Tech.

Country blues is their speciality. The concert is at 7:30, and tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for students.

Meanwhile, in Martinsville, John Jackson will present Guitar Rags and Reels tonight at 8 at the Walker Fine Arts Center of Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens.\

PUNNY TITLE: The Virginia Chamber Music Academy in Blacksburg will present a fund-raising concert Saturday night at 8 in the Salon Recital Hall of Squires Student Center at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. It's called "Going Baroque!" and will feature works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Vierdanck.

Soloists will be soprano Mary Burt, trumpeters Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer, mezzo-soprano Emily Lodine, flutist Barli Nugent and harpsichordist Lionel Party.

Tickets are $25, and they will be available at the door.\

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS: Linda Gradstein, Jerusalem correspondent for National Public Radio, will speak at Virginia Tech on Thursday night at 7:30.

The place: the Donaldson Brown Continuing Education Center.

The topic? "Israel's Image in the Media: From the Gulf War Hero to Obstacle to Peace."

Gradstein also will take questions, not only about her topic but also about being a woman journalist in Israel and about working for NPR.\

WINDING UP: Paul-Andre Bempechat, an internationally renowned pianist, will perform Beethoven's last three sonatas Tuesday night at 8 at Olin Recital Hall of Roanoke College. Call 375-2500 for details.
