BOARD TO VOTE ON NEW ELEMENTARY ATTENDANCE ZONES

The Montgomery County School Board is scheduled to vote tonight on the attendance zones for the new Falling Branch Elementary School in Christiansburg.

If the board approves the zones tonight, letters will be mailed to parents on Wednesday telling them which of the Christiansburg schools their children will attend next year.

The board also will hear a report on the new Even Start program, which is getting under way in the Shawsville-Elliston area. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the board office on Junkin Street.

Even Start, which will work with roughly 70 children, is funded by a federal grant of almost $100,000. It is a voluntary program aimed at undereducated adults who have children of preschool age.

Parents in the program must agree to work on their own education as well as learn how to help their own children with their schooling and to be role models for them.

The Even Start program will work either through a mobile classroom, which will serve roughly 40 families, or through two outreach workers, who will work with about 30 families.

Currently 35 children from 30 families have signed up for the program. The mobile classroom will take to the road by the end of February.

As for the attendance rezoning, the Falling Branch school was built to relieve overcrowding at the Christiansburg Primary and Christiansburg Elementary schools. For that reason, the committee has recommended that no parents be allowed to transfer their children to a school outside of their attendance zone.
