GLENVAR OUTSHOOTS LEXINGTON

Glenvar shot 67 percent in the second half and outscored Lexington 20-11 in the third quarter on its way to a 65-52 victory Wednesday in the first round of the Pioneer District boys' basketball tournament.

The homestanding Highlanders (13-8) led 27-21 at the half, but they made 15 of 21 field-goal attempts in the final two quarters and switched to a zone press on defense to keep Lexington away from the basket.

Glenvar's frontcourt was the difference in the game. Steve Ashworth (18 points, 12 rebounds), Scott Highberger (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Jason Woolwine (16 points) led the way.

On Friday night at Natural Bridge, Glenvar plays top-seeded Covington.

In other Pioneer District games:

\ Covington 77, Rockbridge 61: At Covington, forward Ramon Sampson scored 23 points and the Cougars defeated the eighth-seeded Rebels.

It was the final game in Rockbridge High history. Rockbridge, Lexington and Natural Bridge will combine to form a consolidated Rockbridge County high school next year.

It was Covington's 17th consecutive victory. Sampson, a 6-foot-1 junior, also had eight rebounds and six steals for Covington (18-3).

Point guard Michael Chambers led all scorers with 26 points, including eight 3-point field goals, for Rockbridge.

\ Parry McCluer 75, Bath County 67: At Hot Springs, the sixth-seeded Fighting Blues got 20 points from Jason Baker and 18 from Chuck Baker in defeating the host Chargers, seeded third.

Leslie Gray and Shawn Zdniak added 12 points each for Parry McCluer (11-10), which will face James River in Friday's semifinals.

Todd Jenkins had a game-high of 25 points for Bath County (13-8).

\ James River 76, Natural Bridge 50: At Buchanan, the Knights shot 83 percent (19-of-23) in the second half and rolled past the Rockets.

James River (15-6) outscored Natural Bridge 14-3 in the second quarter with the help of its man-to-man defense, which gave up precious few shots to the Rockets. In the second half, the Knights rarely missed and outscored Natural Bridge 44-31.

They were 33-of-54 for the game.

Chad Caldwell led James River with 19 points and Troy Thompson added 16.

\ Girls

Roanoke Valley District\ Patrick Henry 53, Franklin County 45: At Roanoke, sophomore guards Elisha Jones and Ashaki Johnson combined for 34 points to lead the host Patriots past the Eagles and into the semifinals of the Roanoke Valley District tournament. PH (10-10) plays Cave Spring tonight at 6 at Pulaski County High School. Pulaski County will play William Fleming at 7:30.

Jones and Johnson fed each other off steals and outlet passes after rebounds. Jones finished with a game high of 21 points, and Johnson had 13 points and eight assists. \
