WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Duo in concert

Composer/pianist William Bolcom and his wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, will present "A Musical Trek Through American History: 100 Years of Popular Songs," on Monday night at 8:15 in Hollins Theatre.

The award-winning duo have performed together since 1972 and toured throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

Bolcom won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for music. His works have been commissioned by the Boston and St. Louis symphonies, the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Morris trained privately in speech and voice. She received a Grammy nomination for the duo's first album, "After the Ball - A Treasury of Turn of the Century Popular Song."

The concert is free, but seating is reserved. A buffet will precede the concert. Dinner reservations are $12 per person and may be made by calling 362-6452.

"Li'l Abner"

"Li'l Abner," the musical comedy first done by Showtimers 10 years ago, is being revived by the community theater group in a production that opens Thursday.

Susan Brugh and Jeff Walker are directing the show, which will take place in Showtimers' newly renovated Studio Theater at 2067 McVitty Road, S.W.

The plot of the Norman Panama and Johnny Mercer show turns on the efforts of the citizens of Dogpatch U.S.A. to save their town from becoming a nuclear test site as decreed by Washington on grounds that the town isn't good for anything else.

Among the songs in the show are "Jubilation T. Cornpone," "Namely You" and "Progress Is the Root of All Evil."

Steven Booth plays the title role and Christine-Alice Tennant is Abner's love interest, Daisy Mae. Her parents, Pappy and Mammy Yokum (inventor of Yokumberry tonic) are played by Carter Cox and Jayne Levesque Vest, respectively. Bill Capps plays Marryin' Sam and Mark Mulholland has the part of General Bullmoose.

Sharon Capps is music director for the show, and Patsy Castellano is choreographer.

The show will be presented March 5-8, 12-15 and 19-22, with performances at 8 p.m. except on Sundays, when they will be at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for Thursday and Sunday performances and $9 on Fridays and Saturdays.
