CAR-PAINT VENDOR EARL A. SCHEIB DIES

Earl A. Scheib, the gravel-voiced television entrepreneur who promised to paint "any car, any color" for a price calculated to make the competition wince, died Saturday on his 85th birthday.

Scheib's television advertising posted a fever chart of inflation from the prosperous post-war 1950s to the present. Scheib would announce himself: "Hi, I'm Earl Scheib" and promise to paint any car for a price that rose over the decades from $29.95 to $119.95.

Scheib's discount paint operation became a chain of more than 200 shops in about 40 states.
