CHILD SUPPORT EVADER HANDED 1-YEAR SENTENCE

A man Virginia authorities had listed as one of the state's most successful child-support evaders was sentenced Thursday to a year in jail.

Larry Edward Burchett also was ordered to start paying off some $28,000 he owes for his 16-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter, according to Bedford Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Philip Baker.

State Social Services Department officials say Burchett, who had been under a Bedford County order to pay $300 a month for child support since 1983, had not paid since 1986.

Burchett, 43, was tracked down in Hillsborough County, Fla., in February after being named No. 3 on the state's top 10 list of most wanted child-support evaders in December.

Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge Phil Wallace's one-year jail sentence was the maximum Burchett faced for criminal non-support and contempt of court, Baker said.

Wallace also ordered Burchett to start paying $500 a month - $300 for current obligations to his Bedford County children and $200 to start paying back his old obligation, Baker said.

Wallace indicated that he could reconsider the jail sentence if Burchett provided $10,000 cash toward his debt and another $10,000 as a bond.
