STONEMASON PROVIDED A LAUGH

BAD WEATHER and a gloomy economy found our moods wrapped around our ankles. Then came just what the doctor ordered - laughter, provided by a stonemason! I, for one, wish to thank you, wherever you are.

The gorgeous, anxiously awaited, proud Norfolk and Southern building had yet another trait: personality. Looming high in downtown Roanoke and graciously grabbing at the skyline, this architectural marvel all came together perfectly - almost.

Soon after the last window was shined and the last sawdust particle whisked away, a discovery was made. One letter in "Norfolk" on the cornerstone was not the way it is usually spelled. It is wonderful to know that if the icing slides off the cake or my bacon burns to a crisp, I'm not the only one who makes mistakes! DONNA GARRETT ROANOKE
