LEBLANC WINS DEBUT IN NHL

Olympic goaltending hero Ray LeBlanc stopped 21 shots in his National Hockey League debut Tuesday night and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the San Jose Sharks 5-1.

The only goal LeBlanc allowed was a 15-foot wrist shot by Mike Sullivan at 1:36 of the final period. The puck went over the goalie's right shoulder as the Blackhawks were caught in a defensive change that left them short-handed.

Chicago came back at 5:34 with a goal by Stephane Matteau to put the Blackhawks in front 4-1. Dirk Graham wrapped up the scoring at 17:41.

With less than three minutes to play, the Chicago Stadium crowd starting chanting "U.S.A, U.S.A." and gave LeBlanc a standing ovation for almost a minute. Fans gave him booming ovations when Chicago players came off the bench to congradulate him at the end of the game and when his name was announced as one of the stars of the game.

LeBlanc was recalled 24 hours earlier from Chicago's IHL farmclub in Indianapolis because No. 1 goalie Ed Belfour wanted to be with his wife, who gave birth to the couple's second child on Tuesday morning in Minnesota. LeBlanc was called up for one game on Oct. 10 as a backup goalie but didn't play.
