COUNCIL PLANS HEARING ON MOBILE-HOME REZONING

Town Council will hold a public hearing in April on its plan to recommend that the Giles County Planning Commission reconsider rezoning in the town to allow mobile homes in an area that now excludes them.

Several mobile homes already occupy the property near Wenonah and Montgomery streets that would not be permitted under new county zoning that became effective Jan. 1.

Opening the possibility that more areas in the town may need to be rezoned, Town Manager Ken Vittum said that council needed to ask itself if there are areas in town that are suitable for such housing.

"In the few areas that are zoned for mobile homes, there are very few available lots," he said.

The new county zoning restricts mobile homes within the town limits, he added.

He said he knew of one resident forced to relocate a mobile home outside of town because of the new zoning.

Council also agreed to hold public hearings on two other issues:

Changing the present subdivision ordinance to require that trees cleared from newly developed land will have to be disposed of by the land-owner rather than piled at the side of the road for the town to dispose of them.

Authorizing the establishment of a Public Service Authority to oversee planned countywide water service.

The public hearings will be held during the regular council meeting in the town hall at 7:30 p.m. on April 14.

***CORRECTION***

Published correction ran on March 13, 1992.

Because of a reporting error, the Giles County Planning Commission and county zoning were referred to Thursday in a story about rezoning in Pearisburg. Town Manager Ken Vittum said Thursday that Town Council and the town Planning Commission plan a public hearing April 14 on a proposal to rezone four lots at Wenonah and Montgomery streets for mobile homes. He said mobile homes already occupy the property, but have been in non-compliance since town rezoning several years ago included the lots in residential zoning. Vittum said the town zoning has nothing to do with county zoning.
