SALEM TEEN BADLY HURT IN SHOOTING

A Salem teen-ager was in critical condition Wednesday night after what police said was an accidental shooting at a friend's grandparents' house.

Salem police said two friends from Salem High School were handling a 9mm semiautomatic handgun when it went off. Jamie Burton, 14, was shot in the head. He was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The boys were alone in the house, in the 2200 block of Inge Circle, when the shooting occurred around 7 p.m., police said.

Neighbors were shaken and confused after the shooting.

"It could have been my son over there," said Ronald Harrison, whose son is a friend of the boy left unharmed.

"Everything was quiet, then everyone was in the street," said a woman who asked to remain anonymous. "It all happened so fast."

A nursing supervisor at Roanoke Memorial Hospital declined to discuss the victim's condition. Police Lt. James Stump described his condition as critical.

***CORRECTION***

Published correction ran on March 13, 1992.

Because of a reporter's error, the teen-aged boy who was accidentally shot in Salem on Wednesday was incorrectly identified as Jamie Burton in Thursday's paper. Police did not release the name of the shooting victim because he is a juvenile.
