200 FILE APPLICATIONS FOR AUXILIARY POLICE

A new program to hire auxiliary police officers to handle routine matters so the regular force can concentrate on serious crimes has drawn more than 200 applicants - including some convicted felons.

Over the next two years, the city will train about 60 people to become auxiliary officers with full arrest powers and weapons, but no pay.
