KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TOURNEY TO CONTINUE

The North Roanoke Cavaliers upset the top-seeded Williamson Road Cardinals 53-49 in the junior league's opening round of the Knights of Columbus Basketball Tournament last weekend.

North Botetourt continued the upsets by defeating the Salem Bulldogs 71-58. Other junior-league teams who survived to play in the semifinals this weekend are the High Street Saints, who defeated the North Roanoke Celtics, and the Mason Cove Volunteers, who defeated the Cave Spring Bulls.

In the little league, all the top-seeded teams advanced except the Cave Spring Hornets, who were beaten by the Heights Club Blue. Other teams playing in the quarterfinals will be the North Roanoke Hawks, the South Salem Falcons, the Glenvar Bulls, the Vinton Maroons, the Williamson Road Wahoos, the YMCA Bulls and the Vinton Heat.

The midget league saw only one upset when the South Salem Orange defeated the Williamson Road Celtics 34-24. The top-seeded Vinton Cavaliers squeaked by the North Roanoke Cavaliers 38-36. Other winners were the Cave Spring Supersonics over the South Salem Maroons and the Cloverdale Bulls over the Vinton Hokies.

The winners will continue play Friday at Roanoke Catholic beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday's games will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the Sunday championship games will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Bobby Prince of Lord Botetourt High School will return to defend his title as the Knights' one-on-one champion. He will play Kerry Whitt Saturday at 11:45 a.m.

Other match-ups are Tra Wilson of Salem vs. Bobby Milliron of William Byrd, Reggie Reynolds of William Fleming vs. Alessandro Lima of Franklin County, Marcus Cardwell of North Cross vs. Jemarh Patterson of Roanoke Catholic, Carlos Rhodes of Fleming vs. Robert Cooke of Franklin County, Mike Bryan of North Cross vs. Craig Layman of Lord Botetourt, Josh Pugh of Salem vs. Donald Childress of Byrd, and Mark Byington of Salem vs. Jermare Crump of Fleming.
