LEWIS-GALE BOOTH BIGGER, BETTER THAN EVER

This year's Lewis-Gale Hospital Health Pavilion is bigger and more comprehensive than ever.

The 17-booth space spans such serious health issues as women and AIDS, infertility, heart disease and cancer, and also offers a fascinating look behind the scenes in an operating room, a rescue squad demonstration and children's activities.

"It's educational, yet fun," said Andi Isenhour, R.N., coordinator of the pavilion. "There is a focus on women's issues, but it's not exclusive to women."

She has planned a number of seminars for Saturday and Sunday. They will be held in a private room so participants will feel comfortable asking questions.

The seminar schedule is as follows:

Saturday, 1 p.m. - Ask a Doctor. Richard Forth, M.D., will answer questions about new gynecological procedures, including laser surgery and the laproscopic hysterectomy.

Saturday, 2 p.m. - Stress Busters. MarLane Knupel, registered music therapist and bio-feedback therapist, will teach techniques to relieve headaches and other stressful conditions.

Sunday, 2:30 p.m. - Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack. Stephen T. Brady, M.D., cardiologist, will present this information.

The Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center will hold skin cancer screenings Saturday and Sunday from 3-4:30 p.m. Isenhour stressed that people in the high-risk categories should attend. Testing will be done only on exposed areas, such as the face and arms, which are most prone to skin cancer.

A children's health fair and screening will be held Saturday from 5:30-8 p.m. Screenings will be available for hearing and scoliosis (the latter by Eric Korsh, M.D., spine and back orthopedic surgeon).

The Salem Police Department will be on hand to fingerprint children and there will be information about bike safety.

"We've combined the serious and the fun," said Isenhour. A puppet show will demonstrate good and bad foods and habits. Children also can "see" their hearts beating with the color echocardiogram and be weighed and measured. Isenhour stressed that the echocardiogram demonstration is not a screening.

The children's health fair is appropriate for children up to 12.

Women and heart disease is an important focus of the Pavilion. On Sunday, from 1-2:30 p.m., Lewis-Gale Hospital food-service personnel will demonstrate heart-healthy cooking and hand out recipe cards. Blood pressure screenings will be available all weekend.

Other heart-related displays and demonstrations include the Catheterization Lab; Lewis-Gale's Imaging Services, (featuring diagnostics for heart disease), and a life-size photograph and films of open-heart surgery.

A complete operating room will be set up for gynecological surgery, such as laser and laproscopic surgeries. A birthing room also will be set up.

Other booths include:

Infertility.

Rehabilitation.

Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center, featuring information about breast cancer and about the center's affiliation with the Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Women and Aids, in cooperation with the Roanoke City Health Department.
