CELEBRITIES COOKING UP SURPRISES

You never know what's cooking in the American Women's Show's Celebrity Kitchen. Even Danny Taylor, the show's organizer, can't say for sure.

For instance, he has scheduled appearances by local folks known for cooking - and some not known for cooking - but often other exhibitors may want to use the kitchen to demonstrate a product.

"It may be spontaneous," he says with a laugh, adding that when that happens, an announcement is made alerting show-goers that something is cooking.

And, even when he has an appearance scheduled, he might not know what to expect. WYYD radio's morning team, Steve Stroud and Kimberly Whitehead, will be taking a turn in the kitchen. "They are not known for cooking," admits station promotion director Nan Richards, "but it sounded like fun."

They are going to cook a "mystery meal," Richards said, noting, "I wouldn't think Julia Child will be running to the show."

Promising to be just as much fun - and known for their cooking - are Laban Johnson and Larry Bly, of WBRA-TV's "Cookin' Cheap." Taylor said the two were so popular during their appearance last year that they will be doing two shows, one on Friday and one on Saturday.

Also appearing will be Mary K. Rapoport, consumer affairs director of the Virginia Egg Council. As in years past, she will be demonstrating healthy ways to use eggs in recipes.

Representatives from Nutri-System will demonstrate calorie-conscious cooking and home economics teachers and students from area schools will show off their skills in the kitchen.

The Celebrity Kitchen, Taylor admits, is more a part of the entertainment aspect of the show than any serious attempt to teach cooking. But, he said, attendees likely will pick up some useful information, especially from Rapoport and from the Nutri-System staff. A cookbook, featuring recipes from local celebrities, will be available. And when the kitchen is not in use, it serves as a display for Leo Scott Cabinets of Ferrum.
