MAROONS THWART W&L IN LACROSSE

Junior midfielder Colin McGahren scored two goals in the fourth period Saturday as 11th-ranked Roanoke held off seventh-ranked Washington and Lee 14-11 in a key early season Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game at Alumni Field in Salem.

Roanoke (3-1 overall, 2-0 ODAC) avenged last season's 10-6 loss to the Generals in Lexington, a game that propelled W&L to the 1991 ODAC championship. The Maroons also ended the Generals' 10-game conference winning streak, which dated to 1990.

"We didn't play well last season at W&L," said McGahren, who finished with two goals and two assists. "We had a year to think about that game, and we were definitely waiting to get one back."

After trailing 11-7 midway through the fourth period, Washington and Lee (3-3, 2-1) closed to 11-10 on an unassisted goal by Jeff Roberts with 3:48 to play.

The Maroons responded less than a minute later with the first of McGahren's back-to-back unassisted goals at the 2:50 mark. The second came with 2:22 left, and it put an end to the Generals.

Roanoke, playing without last year's leading scorer Brett Smith, outshot W&L 60-43.

Sophomore goalkeeper Craig Fleming had 19 saves for the Maroons.

"Last year when we started losing we just dropped our heads," Fleming said. "Everyone has matured this year, and winning these big games early in the season has definitely helped our confidence."

Don Treacy had three goals to lead Roanoke, which won 22 of 29 faceoffs.

Jeff Roberts had three goals and three assists for Washington and Lee.

The victory was the Maroons' second straight over a ranked opponent they lost to in 1991. Roanoke defeated fifth-ranked Salisbury State 15-10 last Sunday in Baltimore.
