GUARD'S 1ST BATTALION TO BE DISBANDED EARLY

The state's second-largest Army National Guard unit has fallen victim to the military budget-cutting ax, state Guard officials said.

Some of the 587 soldiers of the 1st Battalion of the 111th Field Artillery will be left without jobs when the unit is disbanded a year ahead of schedule. Successful lobbying to save the Richmond-based 276th Engineer Battalion pushed up the schedule for cutting the 1st Battalion.

Maj. Gen. John Castles, adjutant general of Virginia, said the move "is a recognition of the fact that Virginia must share its part of the burden of reducing the size of the . . . military." - Associated Press
