EMBARRASSING

REPUBLICANS should be happy, in one regard, about Pat Buchanan. His presence on last week's Super Tuesday ballots probably contributed to David Duke's abysmal showing. Had the former Klansman and Nazi sympathizer gotten a larger percentage of the vote, he would have embarrassed the GOP even more than Buchanan has embarrassed President Bush.

But with Duke diminished, Buchanan's utility declined. It's one thing to issue a protest vote against the president. It's another to use, as the vehicle for that protest, a nativist, isolationist, protectionist and, yes, bigot, like Buchanan.
