YOUTH SYMPHONY TO APPEAR SATURDAY

The Roanoke Youth Symphony will make its first appearance in the New River Valley on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Radford High School auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.

New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony is sponsoring the visit "to bring the arts to the New River Valley," said local coordinator Connie Giesen of Radford.

The Roanoke Youth Symphony was started almost 40 years ago by Gibson Morrisey, the founder and first conductor of the Roanoke Symphony. The Youth Symphony is now in its third season under the direction of James Glazebrook, associate professor of music at Virginia Tech.

The Roanoke Youth Symphony involves musicians, ages 14 to 18, from Lexington, Lynchburg and Roanoke. Students representing the New River Valley are from Radford, Christiansburg and Blacksburg.

Saturday's program will include ballet music from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," "Under the Sea," from the children's movie, "The Little Mermaid," and "Papageno, Papagena" from Mozart's "The Magic Flute."

Kimberly Dianne Shoemaker, a senior at BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL, won first place in the Vocal Division in the Bland Music Scholarship contest held last month. She sang the first soprano part of Robert Shumann's "Der Nussbaum."

Joi Marie Jaasma, 16, a junior at Blacksburg High, placed second in the vocal division.

Senior Anne Elise Thomas won first place in the instrument division, with her performance of Mozart's Sonata, KV 332, 1st MVT (Allegro). The second-place winner in the instrument division is Sumeet Sarin, 11, a sixth-grader at Blacksburg Middle School.

The contest was sponsored by the Blacksburg Host Lions Club. Prizes of $35 and $25 were awarded to first- and second- place winners, respectively.

Chris Barry, a sixth-grader at BELLE HETH SCHOOL, will perform at the Music Educators National Conference in New Orleans April 10.

Chris will perform his piano composition "Russian Dance," in the Concert of Original Compositions. He is the son of Michael and Barbara Barry of Radford.

Melissa Atkins, a senior at SHAWSVILLE HIGH AND MIDDLE SCHOOL has been named one of 1,000 finalists in the Jostens Foundation Leader Scholarship Program for 1992.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to 200 students throughout the United States. Scholarship recipients will be announced in April.

The PULASKI COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Band Boosters will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Elections for officers will be held and the band students will perform.

More than 40 members of the BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL debate team traveled to Lynchburg for the State Catholic Forensics League Tournament. They competed with over 100 students from schools across the state.

The top four winners in each category will compete in the national tournament in Arlington on Memorial Day weekend. The winners are:

\ Declamation: Rasna Sarao, Nahala Durrani, Sarah Barbeau.

\ Duo Interpretation: Ben Oderwald and Daniel Harvey, Martha Baker and Erel Topuz, Jaime Clemmer and Phillip Price, Frank Schwartz and Jeff Emerson, Adam Jortner and Lisa Reidel, Geoff Murphy and Michael Johnson.

\ Dramatic-Humorous Interpretation: Jeff Emerson, Kevin Early, Tiffany Peterson, Frank Schwartz, Phillip Price, Margo Hasselman.

\ Oral Interpretation: Joanna Wolford, Bo Patrick, Ayesha Irani, Tristan Carolan, Carla Craven, Dennis Price, Leon Kok.

\ Original Oratory: Nancy Vogler, Alisa Bates, Aaron Mullins, Fred McNeil, Jenny Scheutz.

\ Extemporaneous Speaking: Jonathan Tze, Max Scheutz, Jason Price, Njambi Good, Ryan Brown.

\ Policy Debate: Dan Thomas and Ashok Kuppuamy, Jaime Clemmer and Amy Tomchin.

\ Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Adam Jortner and Jenny Scheutz.

\ BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL senior Tina Price has been named the March student of the month. She is the daughter of William and Rebecca Price.

Tina is active in many school activities and clubs including Future Business Leaders of America, Students Against Drunk Driving, Distributive Educational Clubs of America, New River Valley Mall Teen Board and Student Council.

She also is on the school dance team and has been recognized as the first Blacksburg High School student to receive a small-business management certificate.

The District VII Vocational Industrial Clubs of America contest will be held at CHRISTIANSBURG HIGH SCHOOL Thursday. There are over 12 areas of competition.

Six juniors have been named as CHRISTIANSBURG HIGH SCHOOL'S representatives to American Legion Girl's State and Boy's State for the summer of 1992.

Jill Johnson, Carrie Porterfield and Tracy Reed will attend Girl's State and Becky Cheadle will be alternate.

Attending Boy's State will be Kevin Bennett, Pat Hilt and John-Michael Knowles, with Josh Wirt as alternate.

The Virginia Community Action Program Council and the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Workers of America is sponsoring an ESSAY CONTEST for high school seniors. Up to $2,100 in scholarships will be awarded.

Students may choose from any of the following topics: a biography of any great leader of the past, the history of any specific international union, women's role in labor's past, labor history of any era, the history of labor's role in education, politics, legislature or lobbying or what unions mean to today's family.

The essay should be no more than four pages. The deadline to enter is April 30. For more information, see your high school guidance counselor.

Another scholarship available to high school seniors in Floyd County is the J.C. Waters, III Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is in memory of J.C. Waters, who was killed in 1989 by a drunken driver. He was a junior at Floyd County High School.

Scholarships will be awarded to students who meet one or more of the following criteria: a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a member of the varsity club or participated in golf or basketball.

\ FLOYD HIGH SCHOOL students interested in applying for the scholarship should see their counselor.

\ NARROWS ELEMENTARY seventh-graders are sponsoring the second annual arts and crafts show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over 20 crafters will be in the school gym.

Refreshments will be sold and a spaghetti dinner will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. All proceeds benefit the seventh-grade trip to Richmond, Williamsburg and Washington D.C.
