6 LEFT HOMELESS; FIREFIGHTER HURT

A fire destroyed a Northwest Roanoke house early Monday, leaving six people homeless and one firefighter injured.

Firefighters responded just after midnight to the blaze at a brick ranch house in the 4100 block of Fielding Avenue.

The fire, which caused an estimated $45,000 worth of damage, started on a child's bed, although investigators were not sure of the exact cause, Deputy Fire Marshall David Rickman said. It was not considered suspicious.

Firefighter R.M. Overacker was injured in the blaze when he got too close to the flames, Capt A.M. Ferris said. Overacker was treated for second-degree burns on his hands and arms and released from Community Hospital.

Brenda Saunders, two other adults and three children escaped uninjured. The relationship between the adults and children was unclear.
