HARTMAN GETS 500TH WIN AT TECH

Denny Hedspeth and J.R. Hawkins slugged home runs Tuesday to give coach Chuck Hartman his 500th baseball victory at Virginia Tech.

The Hokies clubbed Western Carolina 10-1.

Hartman's record in 14 seasons coaching the Hokies is 500-230-3. He goes for No. 501 today at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

Brad Clontz, a junior from Patrick County, pitched eight strong innings, striking out four and walking none. He improved his record to 5-0.

Six batters had two or more hits for Tech (14-2-1), including freshman Dee Dalton from Roanoke, who banged a triple and a single. - Staff report
