LANCERS' SOFTBALL TEAM WHIPS CHATHAM 19-4

Chonda Curry drove in seven runs with three hits as Laurel Park blasted Chatham 19-4 in high school softball Wednesday.

Kim Payne added two hits and three RBI for the visiting Lancers. Dianna Burton had three hits and an RBI for Chatham.

In other softball:

At Ridgeway, Magna Vista used 19 walks to score 18 first-inning runs on its way to a 22-1 rout of Dan River. The game was shortened to five innings because of the slaughter rule. Emily Johnson had a triple and Jennifer Jordan pitched a one-hitter for the Warriors.

Salem's Kelly Robinson went 4-for-5 with two triples and five RBI as the Spartans traveled to Glenvar and won 9-7 in the the Highlanders' season opener.

Glenvar's Amy Moses was 2-for-4, had three steals, two RBI and a couple diving catches in the field. Rachelle Litton got the win for Salem (2-1) and had two strikeouts and three walks. Nikki Hall had eight strikeouts and nine walks for Glenvar.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Marion, nine players scored as Blacksburg swamped Marion 9-0 in the opening game of the season for the Indians.

At North Cross, the Raiders (2-0) got single goals from five players and defeated Miller School (0-2) 5-1 in the Virginia Independent Conference opener for both. Scoring goals were Aaron Hodgin, Eric Mull, George Vogel, Jesse Webster and Ryan Cook, who also had two assists.

North Cross plays host to Cave Spring on Friday in a key matchup in the valley.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Salem ran away from Northside 91-31 on double wins by Karen Graninger, Amy Pitts and Suzanne Wolfe. Graninger won the 200- and 400-meter dashes, Pitts took the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Wolfe won the shot put and discus.

Cave Spring romped Halifax 91-36 and Lisa Hodges won all three events she was in: shot put, discus and high jump.

\ BOYS' TRACK: The Cave Spring boys got by Halifax 70-62 on the strength of the Barber twins. Tiki Barber won the long and triple jumps, and the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Ronde Barber won the 110 hurdles and was second in the triple jump. The Knights won the 1,600 relay on more twins power: Todd Doughty and Baker Doughty teamed with the Barbers for the victory.

Tim Divers won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and Andrew Pauley took the 800 and 1,600 runs as Lord Botetourt defeated Blacksburg 69-58
