3 HAVE APPLIED FOR 2 VACANCIES ON SCHOOL BOARD

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors has three applicants so far for two upcoming vacancies on the School Board.

The terms of Mike Sowder of District D and Annette Perkins of District A expire June 30.

Perkins has indicated she would like to be reappointed. Sowder has not said yet whether he wants to be reappointed.

Perkins of Blacksburg was appointed to the board last year to fill the unexpired term of James Hassall, who resigned. She retired last June as a teacher at Blacksburg High School, where she was chairman of the social studies department. She holds a master's degree from Virginia Tech.

Former School Board Member Robert Anderson has also notified County Administrator Betty Thomas that he is interested in the District A seat.

Anderson served on the board from 1983 to 1987. The Baltimore native is a civil engineering graduate from the University of Maryland. He was an area engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers in Southwest Virginia from 1971 through 1990, when he retired.

The only formal candidate for the District D seat is Michael W. Etgen of Christiansburg. Etgen works for Volvo-GM in Dublin.

In his letter to the board, Etgen said he has lived in the county for 24 years. He graduated from Blacksburg High School and Virginia Tech and was a teacher in the county schools from 1975-78.

Barry Worth, a member of the Montgomery County Taxpayers Association, told a recent meeting of that group that he intended to apply for the District D seat. But as of Wednesday, he had not submitted an application.

Those interested in either of the School Board seats should send a letter of intent and brief resume to Thomas at P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. The deadline is April 15.

Candidates must be registered voters and live in the districts for which they apply.

District A covers most of the southern and southeastern portions of Blacksburg along with the northeastern portion of the county. District D covers most of the southwestern portion of Christiansburg along with the southern and southwestern portions of the county.

The supervisors plan to publicly interview all candidates beginning April 27.
