LIBERTY'S CHAFFIN DRIVES IN GAME-WINNING RUN

At Bedford, Billy Chaffin knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Liberty beat Rustburg 8-7 in a Seminole District baseball game Wednesday.

Justin Luppachino went 3-for-3, Jerry Pagett had three runs batted in and Mike Thompson had two RBI for the Minutemen (2-1).

In other baseball:

At Naruna, Charles Taylor went 4-for-4 and had five RBI to lead Jefferson Forest to a 9-3 Seminole District victory over William Campbell. Ryan Gilleland and Anthony Poindexter added three hits each for the Cavaliers (2-1). Winning pitcher Troy Smith allowed just three hits.

At Daleville, Lord Botetourt and Narrows battled to a 3-3 standoff that was called because of darkness. Tim Meador had two doubles and an RBI for the Cavaliers, and sophomore Billy Arthur struck out 10 in his first pitching start. For Narrows, Brian Evans went 2-for-2 with an RBI and pitcher Rodney Perdue struck out seven.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Marion, nine players scored as Blacksburg swamped Marion 9-0 in the opening game of the season for the Indians.

At North Cross, the Raiders (2-0) got single goals from five players and defeated Miller School (0-2) 5-1 in the Virginia Independent Conference opener for both. Scoring goals were Aaron Hodgin, Eric Mull, George Vogel, Jesse Webster and Ryan Cook, who also had two assists.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At William Byrd, Christiansburg swept the shot put and the 1,600-meter run, and won a tri-meet against Alleghany and William Byrd. Maureen Jackson won the shot, Carrie Porterfield took first in the 1,600, and Leslie Cosgriff placed first in the 800. Megan Crowgey scored 9 3/4 points for the Demons.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At William Byrd, Christiansburg racked up 100 points by winning 11 of 14 events to take first place in a tri-meet. Darrell Lucas won the high hurdles, intermediate hurdles and 200-meter dash for the Demons, while Brian Eigel won the 1,600 and 800. Alleghany finished second with 43 and William Byrd third with 16.

The Cave Spring boys got by Halifax 70-62 on the strength of the Barber twins. Tiki Barber won the long and triple jumps, and the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Ronde Barber won the 110 hurdles and was second in the triple jump.

Tim Divers won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and Andrew Pauley took the 800 and 1,600 runs as Lord Botetourt defeated Blacksburg 69-58
