PETRENKO SKATES TO MEN'S TITLE

At Oakland, Calif., men's figure skater Victor Petrenko added his first world championship to the Olympic gold medal he won last month. He did it powerfully after finishing second the last two years.

The 22-year-old Ukranian earned a pair of perfect 6.0s and 11 other 5.9s for artistry during his free skate.

Three-time world champion Kurt Browning of Canada, an Olympic flop when he came in sixth, placed second Friday. He was followed by Canada's Elvis Stojko, who was seventh at Albertville, France.

The biggest move in the free skate was made by Mark Mitchell, the 23-year-old American who had been bumped from the Olympic team after finishing third at nationals. Mitchell was fourth Friday and surged from eighth to fifth.

Just ahead of Mitchell was Christopher Bowman, the U.S. champion.
