CLEMSON GOLFERS WIN; UVA 2ND; TECH 11TH

Second-ranked Clemson pulled away to a 16-shot victory over Virginia in the Furman University Invitational golf tournament Sunday.

The Tigers had an 866 team total, and the Cavaliers had an 882, one shot ahead of third-place Wake Forest. East Tennessee State was fourth at 885, and Ohio State was fifth at 886.

Virginia Tech shot a total of 305 and finished at 912, tied with the Paladins for 11th place among the 22-team field.

Clemson also took the individual title. Mark Swygert defeated Tai Teshima of East Tennessee State on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. The two finished regulation play at 212 after three rounds over the 6,900-yard, par-72 Furman University Golf Course.

Brian Sharp had the best score for Virginia Tech with a 72 for a 221 total. The freshman from Winston-Salem tied for 13th with defending champion and two-time All-American David Duval of Georgia Tech. Sharp's finish was his seventh in a row in the top 20.

Ross Roberts and Scott Rardin each shot a 78, and Clayton Friend had a 77 for the Hokies. - Staff report
